Subject: Bessie Small update
Fellow Board Members,
Our attorney spoke with the ADA handling the case regarding what’s been offered to Bessie.
The offer on the table is 7 years, all but 30 months suspended (roughly 54 months in prison) followed by 3 years probation with conditions (including restitution and substance abuse counseling).
This has been in effect since July of last year and of course this is subject to change but let’s cross our fingers it doesn’t.
It also appears this may be the reason for the change of attorneys since last summer so we will wait and see what happens with the next hearing. I will update y’all if anything happens or changes.
Thanks,
DJ

Fellow Board Members,
As many of you know, the issue dealing with our former Office Manager, Bessie Small, has been ongoing since September 2016. As we are heading to the second anniversary I see, hear, and feel the frustration from the members, myself included, that the criminal side of this has not been resolved. In order to be transparent, and in keeping the membership up to date I asked our attorney to draft a letter to the Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney handling our case voicing our displeasure for the way it’s been handled. The past week, Bessie was granted a final 60 day extension to either accept the plea deal that’ll be offered, or go forward to trial. We haven’t been told what the offer is, but we can only hope the next hearing will be the final one for the criminal proceedings and justice will be served. After that we have two civil suits pending Bessie Small and family members.
Ride with Pride,
DJ Alvarez Int’l President

by Robert Freeman on 12/29/16

It is with deep regret to notify you of the passing of Alverna M. Miller, mother-in-law of Blue Knight member, Allen C. Lester (mother of Rev. Dr. Paula Miller-Lester).

Mrs. Miller was a great admirer of Blue Knights Maryland One. She thought the organization was stellar and supported events like the Annual Warren T. Holmes Memorial Crab Feast and Maldonado Night as long as her health allowed her to do so.

In case you are able to attend, information on the service is attached.

Please keep the family in your prayers - especially her husband who now must adjust to life without his wife of 60 years. Thank you.

Message form Bob and Stephanie Hall
by Robert Freeman on 10/21/16

THIS MESSAGE IS COURTESY OF MIKE WILLIAMS:

Message of Special Thanks & Appreciation to the Blue Knight Brothers and Sisters of MD1 from Bob & Stephanie Hall.

With Special Thanks To All Of You!
Although this note says "Thank You"
In just this simple way,
There's special meaning in these words
To all of you today,
For the thoughts behind this message
Are especially warm and true,
And words cannot express
The special thanks this brings to you. Bob & Stephanie Hall

**** The personal note from Stephanie Hall reads as follows:

To All You Wonderful Blue Knights,
I can't express gratitude enough to all those members that came to the aid of their Brother Blue Knight (and his wife). Your visits lifted Bob's spirits in a time when he really needed it.

You lifted a burden from me as well, knowing he would have his "lunch buddies" eased my mind.

Thank you all so very much; You have shown me what being a true Blue Knight is all about.

God Bless You All!!!
Stephanie Hall

Pastor Bernard Taylor (Health Status)
by Robert Freeman on 10/13/16

BLUE KNIGHTS MARYLAND ONE

The following information about Reverend Taylor is from Mike Williams:

Pastor Bernard Taylor (Chaplain MD1) continues to battle BRONCHOCONSTRICTION which basically means that his bronchial tubes are all but "closed" thereby making it very difficult to breath.

Due to the extent of his trauma, he has a Speech Therapist to help retrain his voice to be able to speak normally again --- which will take some time. It should be noted that, in addition to Pastor Taylor's extreme discomfort in attempting to "speak," he is weak and must sit or lay down as much as possible to regain his strength.

Therefore, at this juncture, Pastor Taylor re bronchial tubes are all but "closed" thereby making it very difficult to breath. Due to the extent of his trauma, he has a Speech Therapist to help retrquests our continued prayers while he has treatments, rests and recuperates.

Pastor Taylor confided in Mike Williams that, despite his best efforts to attempt to attend the General Membership Meeting last night, he was too weak to do so. He also requested that MD1 be informed that he greatly appreciates the very uplifting "get well" card signed by the members of MD1 and the outpouring of caring & concern for his well-being.

Pastor Taylor will keep MD1 apprised of progress and reiterates his request that we keep him lifted up in prayer.

Brother Bob Hall's Update
by Robert Freeman on 10/07/16

THE FOLLOWING UPDATE ON BOB HALL IS FROM MIKE WILLIAMS:

A) Bob and Stephanie met on Monday, Oct. 3rd with the In Home - Care Plan Professionals; Bob will be released, to his home, from the Genesis Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, October 8th.

B) Bob & Stephanie are attempting to arrange for Bob's Physiotherapy appointments to take place in the early AM or late PM so as to inconvenience family and friends as little as possible.

C) Bob's left elbow is crushed and held together by a metal plate and screws; As a result, he has sustained 26% less mobility in that arm.

D) His left wrist is fractured & his middle finger is broken. He wears a special calibrated mobility wrist brace which has settings allowing for degrees of up and down movement.

E) His right hand is fractured & his trigger finger broken; His ribs are cracked but healing well.

F) His right leg is fractured above the knee; He wears a calibrated mobility brace on that leg which allows him some degree of stability during physiotherapy.

Bob & Stephanie would like the MD1 family to know that, even the doctors and staff, unanimously agree that Bob's miraculous recovery and rapid healing process is due in large part to his positive attitude and the tremendous, unselfish, hands-on support provided by Blue Knight MD Chapter 1.

Bob and Stephanie would also like us to know that there aren't enough words to express the depth of gratitude they feel for all the support MD1 has gone above and beyond to provide. However, they look forward to the day that they can do so personally.

Mike Williams will further advise of Bob's status. Subject: Re: HQ Employee status UPDATE

New Hotline
by Robert Freeman on 05/07/16

Good Morning,

I established a new hotline number using Google Voice. This is a free service and the only painful feature for me (or whoever wants to operate the hotline) is has to log-in to the account so incoming calls are routed directly to google voice mail and not to my phone number, which is required to record the voice messages. On the plus side, multiple people can operate the hotline. I think we need at least one more person to help, with a better voice than mine! :) Callers can leave a voice message and since I'll have to login every 2 days, I'll be able to respond. We also have the ability to create conference calls and keep track of how many calls we get per month.

The new phone number is: 301-539-9414

I have the law ride and chapter meeting recorded if you want to pass out the number to the members. I've been calling it, everything seems to be working.

RWP,
T

Safety Corner Update

The following are the 10 most common causes of motorcycle accidents :

Unsafe lane changes. A driver risks colliding with a motorcyclist when he or she fails to check his or her blind spot or signal when changing lanes.
Car doors. Some motorcycle accidents occur when a driver opens the door of their parked vehicle in the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
Speeding. A leading cause of all types of auto accidents, speeding reduces a vehicle’s chance of seeing and reacting to other drivers in time to prevent a collision. The higher the speed, the greater the impact and the more severe the consequences.
Driving under the influence. Drivers who cause accidents because they were driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs may face both civil and criminal liability.
Lane splitting. Driving between two lanes of traffic is called “lane splitting.” This practice is not legal in Florida and is especially dangerous for inexperienced riders.
Sudden stops. Rear-end accidents resulting from following tocommon causes of to a motorcyclist.
Inexperienced drivers. Inexperienced drivers are likely to make unsafe moves on the road that could compromise the safety of other motorists.
Left turn accidents. Right of way errors or misjudgments of distance while making a left turn are common causes of injury and death to motorcycle riders.
Dangerous road conditions. Crumbling pavement, potholes, debris, and a lack of necessary signals and signs can all increase a motorcycle rider’s chances of losing control of his or her vehicle.
Motorcycle defects. The manufacturer of a poorly designed or manufactured motorcycle part can be held liable for any injuries or deaths arising from use of the defective part.

Subject: Thoughts from the MDC Safety Officer

Please share with your Chapter Presidents.

Last weekend I rode to Maggie Valley NC, Pigeon Forge TN, Gatlinburg TN and enjoyed the NC & TN mountains.

I rode with a group that I am not accustomed to riding with and saw some good group riding and some bad.

One of the guys dumped his bike on the Tail of the Dragon early in the day. He scraped up the right side, destroyed his right bag and bent his handle bars. I would say he was riding above his skill level. He rode his bike all day and back home Sunday but it looked terrible and probably rode different.

It was what I would call a Single Vehicle Accident but he didn't want to report it. I think that he was embarrassed and a little sore but I am sure that he was guilty of #7 of the list below. He might be a great rider in eastern NC where everything is flat, straight and has 90 degree turns but he is inexperienced with curves and switch backs.

If we ride our motorcycles, we all go places that are new and we are not familiar with. If we ride with different people, we will not be aware of their riding styles or abilities. Don't try to keep up in the curves or on the Interstate if you feel unsafe. I let some of this group go ahead when they started lane splitting in TN. I do not lane split anywhere and I do not care what the law is.

I am not a perfect rider but I don't think I made as many mistakes as some of the group did.

The lesson for today is, Ride your own Ride. Be Safe and Live to Ride another day.
